Overview of Introduction to Commercial Dispute Resolution

The Introduction to Commercial Dispute Resolution is a new and unique module which will be taught fully online. It is being offered jointly by the department of Law at the Aberdeen Business School and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb). The teaching will have both legal and practical input as it is taught by a senior legal academic and a very experienced dispute resolution professional.

Aims of the Module
The Introduction to Commercial Dispute Resolution module has been designed for two distinct purposes, which are:
1. Completion of the module will allow Associate Membership level of the CIArb to be reached.
2. It offers an introductory module to a wide range of dispute resolution processes available around the world. There are also additional benefits to those who study this course.


Who is this module for?

The module is designed for those with little or no prior knowledge of the diverse range of dispute resolution practices available in the commercial sector. Although dispute resolution via the public courts is touched upon, the module will concentrate mainly on non-public court resolution methods.

Therefore, anyone who is involved in commercial transactions where disputes can arise, including professionals from the sectors of construction, engineering, energy, surveying, architecture or law can enrol.


Subjects studied

The subjects you will be studying are:

- Selection of Dispute Resolution Methods
- Conflict Avoidance
- Commercial Arbitration
- Mediation and Conciliation
- Construction Industry Dispute Resolution
- International coverage from a variety of jurisdictions

Assessment
Two short problem-solving coursework exercises which you will submit electronically. Online feedback on optional regular activities will also be available.


How is it delivered?

Delivery is fully online which means you can work at your own pace over the 12 week duration of the module. It will be delivered through the online learning platform at the Robert Gordon University, CampusMoodle.
