IT Services: Policies
This section provides a reference point for Policies which have been agreed with the University Strategic Management Team, and which are therefore current Policies of the University. It also provides a reference to policies that are under development and at various stages of consultation.

IT Security Policy
The IT Security Policy was prepared in 2000, based on a policy published by the Murdoch University, Perth, Australia. As a security policy, it is quite complex as it covers security issues for professional IT staff in the University as well as for end users.
All users should certainly be familiar with the “Quickstart” guide and the “JANET” Acceptable Use policy. The “IT Guidelines for all users” document is a bit longer but provides useful background on legislation, guidelines on email and social media use, tips on password construction etc and is recommended reading.

Disposal of Desktop Equipment
There are many key issues to be borne in mind when it comes to the disposal of University Desktop Equipment. In particular, we have to ensure that University data is properly cleaned from the machine, and that all software is removed, except that which was purchased with the original equipment. As RGU now operates a University-wide programme of replacement, disposal has to be co-ordinated on a University-wide basis. It is no longer appropriate that individual Departments or Schools act in isolation to dispose of equipment (e.g. to Staff or Students) as it is possible that such equipment could be re-used elsewhere in the University.
Finally, there are new environmental regulations governing the disposal of equipment, and it is essential that we comply with these regulations.
For these reasons, we are in the process of preparing a policy for the disposal of equipment, which will go to formal consultation shortly. The attached is a working draft.
